After finishing the Premier League 2022-23 season in 17th place and narrowly missing relegation, Everton are looking to improve their squad quickly to ensure their place in the Premier League next season.
The Toffees avoided relegation on the last day of last season under manager Sean Dyche having narrowly survived the previous year under Frank Lampard. If they were to be relegated next year, it would be their first time in the Premier League era.
In order to improve their squad for the upcoming 2023-24 season and avoid relegation, Sean Dyche seeks to secure players in the summer transfer window. The club has already allowed multiple players to leave which has shifted their focus to obtaining new players to join the club.
Despite rumours of England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford moving to Manchester United, he has confirmed his desire to stay at Everton next season. Pickford is one of the club’s most valuable assets in spite of his large wage and Everton’s financial problems creating potential issues for the club’s finances in the future.
Ashley Young became Everton’s first signing of the summer on a free transfer. The defender had a strong last season and is regarded to be a positive addition to the Everton squad despite him being among the top 5 oldest players in the Premier League.
Discussions over Villareal winger Arnaut Danjuma have been taking place for 12 months but he is believed to move to Goodison Park after turning down an offer from AC Milan. The deal is expected to be completed in the coming days. The loan move will reportedly cost Everton £3.5 million. Danjuma, a former Netherlands international player, started for Tottenham Hot Spurs just twice during his loan at the club and scored twice in his 11 appearances for the club.
Uncertainties have arisen surrounding the future of 20- year old forward Tom Cannon who has been approached by Preston North End as their main signing target for the next season. Sunderland are also rumoured to be interested in signing Cannon. This great loss of talented players could present difficulties for Everton.
Bookies Bet365, Paddy Power and Betfair have Everton at 3/1 to be relegated this season. Whereas the newly promoted Luton is the favourite for relegation, with Bet365 and William Hill having them at ⅓ to return to the Championship at the end of the season.
In the betting for the Top 6 finish in the Premier League, Everton are 30/1, making their chances of finishing among the best English clubs very slim.
Sean Dyche, who has been at Everton since January 2023 is 12/1 with Paddy Power and Betfair to be the next manager to leave their post, highlighting the need for change among the club in order to satisfy the fans and reassure them of the club’s place in the Premier League.
Ultimately, major changes are needed within the club to ensure a brighter future for its fans and to improve its current streak of poor performances in recent years. This should be helped by acquiring new players such as Danjuma who present exciting prospects for the Toffees.
