After a frantic summer in the transfer market, it was a very quiet 24 hours for Everton on deadline day.
Having conducted his business early on in the window, manager Roberto Martinez was not expected to bring a host of players but there were reports that the Spaniard had launched a late bid to sign Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley.
The move for Cleverley did not materialize at the end but the Toffees did manage to secure signing of a new player in the form of Belgian wonderkid David Henen and here is a look at what sort of impact the 18-year old will have at Everton this season.
Value for Money – 1/5
In a strange deal, Henen arrived at Goodison Park on a season long loan from Olympiacos and the nature of the transfer certainly baffled many.
The striker had been training with Everton over the past few weeks but the Toffees were unable to sign the player permanently from Anderlecht due to disagreements in transfer fees and the youngster had instead moved to Greek side Olympiacos on Monday for a fee believed to be in the region of around £3million.
However, Everton went on to peculiarly sign the 18-year old on a season long loan deal just a few hours later and many have been left wondering as to why the club have gone through the trouble of bringing in the striker to the club.
While there is no doubting that Henen is an extremely fine young talent, signing a player on loan despite him not having too much prospects of first team football is a very puzzling decision indeed by the Toffees.
Probability of Making an Impact – 1/5
Martinez has stated that Henen will be working with the Under-21 development squad and the striker is unlikely to be handed too much time on the pitch for the first team barring perhaps an odd League Cup appearance.
Henen can certainly continue his development as a player at the club but given that the young man has already signed for Olympiacos, his progress will hardly benefit Everton in the long run.
Overall Verdict 1/5
If there is already a deal in place for Everton to sign Henen permanently next season that we are not aware of then the arrival of the striker does make a bit of sense.
However, at the moment everyone is finding it difficult to get their head around why the Toffees bothered to bring in the youngster given the fact that he has already signed for another club.
