It is clear for everyone to see that Everton have endured a torrid first half of the season and rather than challenging for a Champions League finish, the Toffees are now involved in a relegation battle.
Everton are perhaps good enough to be able to avoid a relegation scrap but nothing can be taken for granted in the Premier League and in order to aid his side’s rise up the table, manager Roberto Martinez has decided to strengthen his ranks with the addition of Aaron Lennon.
Lennon joins Everton on a loan deal till the end of the season from Tottenham Hotspur and here is a look at whether or not the winger will be a success at Everton –
Probability of Making an impact – 3.5/5
When he burst into the scene for Tottenham Hotspur as a teenager back in 2005, Lennon was expected to take the Premier League by storm and was heralded to become a star for both club and country.
Unfortunately though, lack of consistency has meant that Lennon has not been able to fulfill his promise and it has been a career of ‘what could have been’ for the winger so far. At 27 though, Lennon still has time to get his career back on track and a move to Everton provides him the opportunity to do just that.
Having made 364 appearances for Tottenham, Lennon has a lot of experience under his belt and if he can get consistency back into his game – the 27-year old could well prove to be a good addition to the ranks at Goodison Park.
Roberto Martinez certainly encourages his team to attack from the wide positions and pacey players such as Kevin Mirallas, Seamus Coleman and Aiden McGeady are key to the Spaniard’s plans. With pace to burn, Lennon fits into Martinez’s philosophy very well and he could prove to be an astute signing for Everton.
Value for Money – 4/5
Lennon signs on a loan deal till the end of the season and his capture can be seen as a low risk move for Everton. Lennon is a very good player on his day but Martinez will have to instill a bit of discipline and consistency into his game in order to get the best out of him.
The 27-year old could well prove to be the catalyst to turn Everton’s season around if he gets going but that is a big if and only time will tell whether the winger can succeed at Goodison Park.
Overall Verdict – 4/5
The signing of Lennon is a good deal for Everton and he seems like an astute capture. However, it remains to be seen whether the winger can adapt quickly enough to be able to produce the performances that he is capable of.
