After weeks of speculation, Everton are finally on the verge of completing their second signing of the season in the form of Bosnia & Herzegovina youngster Muhamed Besic from Hungarian side Ferencvaros.
While the deal has not been officially confirmed as of yet, Everton manager Roberto Martinez has already revealed that Besic will be joining up with the rest of the squad in their pre-season tour and his signing as certainly got the Toffees’ faithful excited.
Here is a closer look at whether the signing of Besic will prove to be a hit or a miss for Everton.
Value for Money – 4.5/5
Besic has been long considered as one of the brightest talents in Europe and for Everton to be able to land the midfielder for a meager fee of £4million, certainly seems to be a very good piece of business for the club.
Despite being only 21, Besic has already earned a wealth of experience in his career during his spell with Hamburg and Ferencváros, and has also been an integral part of the Bosnia & Herzegovina national team – making his debut at the tender age of 17.
Besic is certainly at an age where he will develop and under the tutelage of Roberto Martinez, the young man has every possibility of flourishing into a top class player in the coming years. As a result, the money that has been invested in the young man certainly looks worth every penny at the moment.
Probability of making an impact – 3.5/5
A combative midfielder who is very good on the ball, Besic looks well suited to the Premier League and more importantly, to the style of Everton.
However, one should not expect the young man to be thrust into the Everton starting lineup straightaway as he will need time to adapt to a completely new culture and a way of life in England.
As talented as he may be, Besic will also need to show that he is worthy of first team football in order to win a place ahead of tough competition in midfield, in the form of James McCarthy, Gareth Barry, Ross Barkley, Leon Osman and Darron Gibson.
Despite Besic’s fine qualities as a player, one area where Martinez will have to work very hard on the young man is his fiery temperament. The midfielder has already had his fair share of disciplinary problems in his short career, with his former manager at Hamburg Torsten Fink reportedly strangling him and throwing him out of the dressing room for his poor attitude a couple of years ago.
As a footballer, Besic has all the attributes to become a huge success at Everton. That being said, success is not only based on skill and a lot of it is down to temperament as well and only time will tell whether the young man will have the desired impact at Goodison Park during the upcoming campaign.
Overall Verdict – 4/5
On paper, the signing of Muhamed Besic is certainly a very good one for Everton. Young, talented and developing, Besic ticks all the boxes as exactly the kind of player Martinez wants at the club. At £4million, the young man also looks a major campaign.
While, Besic will have to work hard in order to break his way into the first team as well as adapt to life in England – there is a very good chance that the young man will be a success at Everton.
