It has been a difficult start to the season for Everton so far but in all fairness, the fixture list could not have been tougher for the Toffees.
As a silver lining though, Everton seem to possess a squad more than capable of challenging for the top four and it seems only a matter of time before the new arrivals gel together to produce the desired results.
Latest signing Samuel Eto’o is undoubtedly one of those new players who will need time to settle and here is a look at whether or not the veteran striker will be a success at Everton –
Probability of Making an impact – 4/5
Samuel Eto’o will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the greatest strikers in the world and for Everton to be able to secure the services of the 33-year old should be considered a major coup.
Although certainly not the force he once was due to his advancing years, there is no doubting the fact that Eto’o is still a top quality player who knows his way to goal.
Eto’o understandably does not possess the lightening speed that he relied on earlier in his career but the striker has wonderfully adapted his game to become a predator inside the box and will certainly provide a different option in attack for Everton in comparison to the powerful Romelu Lukaku or the workhorse Steven Naismith.
With Everton having to deal with the added rigours of Europa league as well, Eto’o will prove to be vital in adding strength in depth to the Toffees’ squad and with his experience and know-how at the top level, there is no reason why the Blues cannot dream of claiming silverware in cup competitions this season.
That being said, Eto’o is known to be bit of a moody player and if disinterested, the striker could prove to be a liability rather than an asset on occasions.
Nonetheless, Eto’o is certainly a very good addition to the ranks at Goodison Park and the Cameroonian international looks set to be a big player in Everton’s hopes of finishing in the top four.
Value for Money – 3.5/5
Snapping up a striker in the class of Eto’o on a free transfer seems like a no brainer but it is no secret that the 33-year old’s wage demands are astronomical. Everton work under a very tight wage structure and Martinez certainly seems to have made an exception in order to sign Eto’o.
Although the striker may have lower his demands in comparison to the wages he was earning at Anzhi and Chelsea, he is still one of the top earners at Goodison Park and the two year deals handed to the veteran certainly represent a slight risk.
Overall Verdict – 4/5
All in all, the signing of Eto’o looks a good deal for Everton and although a slight risk – the striker will in all probability play a big role in the Toffees’ potential success this season.
