Everton are considering a move for veteran Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, according to reports from the Daily Mirror
Everton certainly possess one of the most exciting young squads in the Premier League at the moment but despite the plethora of talent at their disposal, the Toffees have grossly underachieved so far this season.
A place in Europe looks unlikely for Everton at the moment but manager Roberto Martinez is likely to continue at the helm of Goodison Park and it will be interesting to see how much of a financial backing the Spaniard will be receiving from the new Iranian owners of the club.
Nonetheless, Martinez has already started identifying transfer targets to pursue in the summer and now according to reports from the Daily Mirror, it has been revealed that the Everton boss is considering a swoop for Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.
Carrick has been a great servant for Manchester United for over a decade now but his future at Old Trafford beyond the end of the current campaign has been put into doubt as he has not yet been offered an extension to his contract which expires in June.
Speaking regarding his future Carrick had said, “My contract is up and I’m not sure what’s happening yet. I haven’t heard anything just at the moment. Hopefully I will sometime soon. I am not making a big deal of it. I’ll just have to wait and see what happens. I am quite relaxed about it.”
Despite his advancing years, a number of Premier League sides such as Arsenal and Newcastle United are said to be interested in making a swoop for Carrick and now even Everton have emerged as one of the contenders to sign the 34-year old over the summer.
Martinez is a fan of Carrick’s abilities and it is believed that the Everton boss wants to bring the England international to Goodison Park and use him as an alternative to Gareth Barry, who is also entering the twilight of his career.
