Despite being linked to a host of players, Everton have been very quiet in the transfer market so far this summer after having only recruited the services of midfielder Gareth Barry on a free transfer.
One can definitely expect a couple of new faces to arrive through the Goodison Park door before the start of the season though, as manager Roberto Martinez has publicly stated that he is looking to make no less than four additions to his Everton squad.
While Everton’s defensive area seems to be well covered, the Toffees will need to strengthen in midfield and especially, in attack.
Last season, much of Everton’s success was down to two young stars – Romelu Lukaku and Gerard Deulofeu. The duo brought fearlessness and wonderful talent into the Toffees’ attacking lineup and were very impressive throughout the campaign.
Unfortunately though, both Lukaku and Deulofeu had joined Everton on loan deals and have since returned to their respective parent clubs.
While Deulofeu seems to be set on challenging for first team football at Barcelona this season, Everton were said to have been priced out of making a permanent move for Lukaku – with Chelsea setting an asking price in excess of £20million for the striker.
However, in news which will certainly delight the Everton faithful, it has been revealed that the Toffees are willing to break the bank and will look to match Chelsea’s asking price of Lukaku.
Throughout the summer, Lukaku has been linked with various clubs such as Atletico Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus among others, but the young man seems to prefer a move back to the familiar surroundings of Goodison Park after enjoying a fine spell last season.
While the potential signing of Lukaku will mean that Everton will have to dig deep into their pockets to sign the striker and probably break their club record fee (set when Maroune Fellaini had arrived to the club for £15million back in 2008), there is little doubting that the young Belgian will be value for money due to his quality and age.
And it is not just Lukaku that Martinez wants from the Chelsea ranks for the upcoming season, as even Christian Atsu has been linked with a loan move to Everton.
Atsu impressed during his loan spell at Dutch side Vitesse last season and came into world reckoning with some magnificent performances for Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
A pacey winger with a bag of tricks, Atsu will certainly prove to be a good replacement for the departed Gerard Deulofeu and considering that the 22-year old does not have too much prospects of first team football at Chelsea next season, he will certainly welcome a chance to play regularly in the Premier League for Everton.
While nothing has been confirmed as of yet, it looks set to be an exciting few days for Everton on the transfer front and if both Lukaku and Atsu arrive at Goodison Park, the Toffees faithful can certainly dream of replicating their fine success of last season.
