Everton’s difficult start to the campaign continued after the Toffees succumbed to their first defeat of the season after being thumped 6-3 by Chelsea at Goodison Park.
While the match would have been a spectacle for the neutrals, Toffees’ manager Roberto Martinez would not have been best pleased with his side’s efforts – especially in defence and the defeat leaves Everton winless in their first three matches.
The Toffees have shown signs of wonderful football so far in their three matches but the 10 goals they have conceded so far has been unacceptable.
Therefore, Martinez would have surely welcomed the international break and will be hoping to have his players recharge their batteries in time for their clash against West Bromwich Albion in a fortnight’s time.
Here is an analysis of the performance of the Everton players on the day –

Tim Howard – 5.5 |
The American international did not do much wrong but found himself picking the ball out of the back of the net on six occasions. Made a couple of good saves but was fortunate not to get sent off after an altercation with Diego Costa. |
Seamus Coleman – 6 |
Was a threat going forward while very solid at the back as well, in nullifying Eden Haazard’s effect on the game. However, it was his unlucky own goal which proved to be decisive at the end. |
Phil Jagielka – 3.5 |
Usually a pillar of strength at the back, Jagielka was uncharacteristically shaky against Chelsea and it was clear to see his struggles in dealing with Diego Costa. Surely not a performance he would want to remember for a long time. |
Sylvain Distin – 3.5 |
Much like his central defensive partner, Distin was a shadow of himself and was exposed cruelly by the likes of Costa and co. While it is too early to say that age is catching up to the veteran defender, the Frenchman certainly needs to prove otherwise following his horrible performances so far this season. |
Leighton Baines – 5
|
Another player who did not play to his best, Baines looks surprisingly short on confidence at the moment. While Baines certainly looks a big threat going forward, the 29-year old is looking very shaky at the back and seems like he has not gotten over his World Cup hangover. |
Gareth Barry – 6 |
As always, Mr. Efficient Gareth Barry put in a solid performance and used the ball judiciously. However, it seemed that the Englishman sat too deep at times and could not pressurize the likes of Cesc Fabregas or Nemanja Matic sufficiently. |
James McCarthy – 6.5 |
While not exactly the replication of his wonderful performance against Arsenal last week, McCarthy was once again impressive and looked very confident on the ball. While he could have done better defensively, the young man was one of Everton’s better performers on the day. |
Aiden McGeady – 5.5 |
The Irishman grabbed a brilliant assist but was too inconsistent throughout the game. McGeady certainly has the talent but tends to somewhat overdo it as evidenced by his performance against Chelsea. |
Steven Naismith – 7 |
The star of the show for Everton, Steven Naismith put another fine performance against Chelsea. Full of running and desire, the Scotsman was a constant thorn to the Blues’ side and continued his fine run of form in front of goal with a neat finish. |
Kevin Mirallas – 6.5 |
Scored a brilliant header to get Everton back into the game after a torrid start and looked a huge threat whenever on the ball. Looks sharp at the moment and will be hoping to build on his performance against Chelsea to kick start his campaign. |
Romelu Lukaku – 5 |
Much had been made about Lukaku taking revenge on Chelsea but sadly, the young man failed to deliver once again. Showed some neat touches but was too quiet for Everton’s liking and the huge price tag on his shoulder seems to be weighing him down a bit. |
Substitutes
Samuel Eto’o – 6 |
Brought on for the last 20 minutes of the game, Eto’o certainly had a big impact after scoring with a wonderful header against his former club. Looks like the veteran striker is still not past it and he could prove to be a valuable player for the Toffees. |
Muhamed Besic – NA |
Came on as a substitute in the 90th minute for his Premier League debut, when the game was already lost – but his torrid first touch allowed Chelsea to grab the sixth. Certainly not the start he would have wanted. |
