While Roberto Martinez’s system of recruiting players on loan may have garnered quite a few critics last season, it certainly paid dividends as the Toffees enjoyed a magnificent campaign where they finished in 5th place ahead of the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
Almost all of the loan signings who arrived at Goodison Park certainly made a positive impact but the one who was perhaps the most impressive was striker Romelu Lukaku.
Lukaku was simply sensational for the Toffees scoring 16 goals in 33 appearances and it would not be an exaggeration to say that the young man was arguably one of the best Everton players last season. As a result, it goes without saying that the loss of Lukaku after his return to Chelsea will be a big blow for Everton.
While Everton fans would certainly take Lukaku back with open arms next season, it seemed very unlikely that the ambitious 21-year old would be returning to Merseyside after making clear that he wants to play Champions League football next season.
There have been talks of Lukaku moving to Goodison Park on a permanent deal as well but Everton will certainly struggle to cough up the £20million Chelsea are reportedly looking for in order to part with the striker.
However, in news which will certainly please the Toffees’ faithful, Lukaku has now hinted that he would be open to a return to Everton next season.
Lukaku said, “I have the opportunity to stay at Everton, it is a possibility and it is something we will have to talk about.
Despite the admission, the striker went on to insist that he will only make a decision about his future after he returns to Belgium following a grueling World Cup campaign.
He continued, “But first I want to go back to Belgium, see my family and get some rest.”
Even though, Lukaku has suggested that a move back to Everton is possible, it remains to be seen whether if the transfer will come into frutition, especially with Spanish champions Atletico Madrid casting a keen eye on the Belgian superstar.
