Everton’s season went from bad to worse as the Toffees were dumped out of the Capital One Cup after putting in another weak performance in their 3-0 loss at the hands of Swansea City on Tuesday.
Everton were simply woeful throughout the match and Martinez would certainly not have been pleased at how his side performed on the day. There were very few positives to take back from the game for Everton, with the return of Bryan Oviedo from a long term injury probably the only saving grace.
Here is an analysis of the performance of the Everton players on the day –

Comment |
Tim Howard – 5 |
Was partly at fault for the first goal but did very little wrong afterwards and was sadly let down by his defenders throughout the match. |
Tony Hibbert – 3.5 |
Hibbert’s lack of pace was glaringly exposed by Jefferson Montero, who gave the veteran defender a torrid time. Culpable for the first and perhaps the third goal as well. |
Sylvain Distin – 4 |
Distin has not been the same ever since the start of the current campaign and it was epitomized by his performance on the day. While Distin seemed to deal well with Gomis, the defender’s ridiculous header inside his own box crashed off the bar and allowed Sigurdsson to score the second for Swansea. |
Antolin Alcaraz – 4 |
Alcaraz spurned a wonderful opportunity to equalize in the first half and his performance afterwards was distinctly poor. Lost possession on too many occasions with a couple of wayward passes and was partly at fault for Swansea’s second goal. |
Luke Garbutt– 5.5 |
The youngster looked much more assured than the experienced players that were playing alongside him in defence and his dangerous crosses into the box did put the Swans’ defence under a lot of pressure. However, Garbutt perhaps could have done better to prevent Nathan Dyer’s goal. |
Aiden McGeady – 4 |
Never really managed to exert his influence on the game and did not trouble the Swansea defenders as much as he would have liked. Hauled off in the second half for Leon Osman. |
Darron Gibson – 6 |
It was a tidy performance from Gibson but he did not look too much of a threat going forward and could not get create enough opportunities to try his trademark shots from distance. |
Muhamed Besic –5.5 |
Much like Gibson, Besic was very neat and tidy on the ball but did not do enough going forward or defensively. Could have done better to provide more cover to Hibbert, with Montero running rings around the veteran defender. |
Bryan Oviedo – 5 |
Making his long awaited return from injury, Oviedo looked good on the ball but it was clear that his fitness levels are at its optimal level. Replaced on the hour mark for James McCarthy. |
Christian Atsu – 6 |
Atsu looked Everton’s most dangerous player whenever on the ball but the Ghanaian went missing for large portions of the game. Should have done better tracking back and helping out his defenders as well. |
Sameul Eto’o – 5.5 |
Missed a glorious chance earlier in the game and did not have too much of a look in afterwards. Starved of good service, Eto’o was very quiet and was taken off at half time. |
Substitutes
Romelu Lukaku – 6 |
Came on after the interval and looked dangerous initially. However, did not get any change out of Ashley Williams and the striker’s influence on the game waned as the game went on. |
James McCarthy – 5 |
Made his entry into the game on the hour mark but did not do much to alter the pattern of the match. |
Leon Osman – NA |
A late substitute but the game was already lost in truth when he made his entry into the frame. |
