There is no doubting that Tony Hibbert is a legend at Everton and enjoys a cult hero status with the fans. Having joined the club over two decades ago as a younng boy, Hibbert is an Evertonian through and through and has gone on to make over 300 appearances for his beloved Blues.
Probably not the most skillful of players, Hibbert has been able to win over the fans with his commitment, loyalty and also strangely his record of not having scored a single competitive goal in his entire career.
In recent times though, the 33-year old has had his involvement in the first team limited due to the persistent injuries as well as the emergence of young Seamus Coleman.
Hibbert had managed to make only 10 appearances for Everton in the past two seasons and as a result, it was believed that the defender would sadly be ending his lifelong association with the Toffees in the summer following the expiration of his contract.
However, manager Roberto Martinez has decided to retain the services of Hibbert by offering the veteran a new two year deal and although a surprise move, it certainly makes sense for both player as well as the club.
While the new deal for Hibbert does not mean that the veteran will be displacing the fantastic Seamus Coleman from the right back spot anytime soon, the 33-year old will surely be a valuable asset as a backup.
Coleman displayed a superhuman effort to play an ever present role in Everton’s campaign last year but with Everton having to deal with the rigors of Europa League football this season, Hibbert will surely be a very important squad member.
It also has to be pointed out that Hibbert is as solid as ever despite his advancing years and will surely be a handy player in the Premier League if necessary. His experience and know how could be an important factor in guiding young players such as John Stones in the next few years as well.
From Hibbert’s perspective, the new deal may not guarantee him playing time but he would certainly have been delighted to have extended his stay with his beloved club in what looks set to be exciting times ahead for the Toffees.
