Everton continued their wonderful run of form by claiming a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Monday night.
In a thrilling encounter, Everton had found themselves two goals down following half time and things were certainly looking ominous for the Toffees at the time. However, led by the inspired Romelu Lukaku, Everton fashioned a wonderful comeback and claimed all three points on the night.
The victory means that Everton have now moved up to 5th place in the Premier League table and the Toffees should head into the Merseyside derby against Liverpool this weekend in very confident mood.
Here is an analysis of the performance of the Everton players on the night –
Player Rating |
Comment |
Tim Howard – 6.5
|
While Howard may have been beaten twice, it has to be said that the goalkeeper produced a good display on the night. Howard commanded his area very well throughout the game and it was another decent performance from the American international. |
Tyias Browning – 6 |
Filling in for Seamus Coleman, Browning looked a bit shaky on the night and was duly replaced on the 70th minute.
Nonetheless, the young man would have learned a lot from the difficult experience. |
Phil Jagielka – 7 |
Playing without his regular central defensive partner, John Stones, Phil Jagielka did not look as comfortable as he has been during previous matches. That said, Jagielka was solid as ever and did well to keep the dangerous Baggies’ attack at bay on the night. |
Ramiro Funes Mori – 6.5 |
With Stones out injured, Ramiro Funes Mori filled in at centre back and while the Argentine defender did do well on his full debut, there were a few shaky moments from the defender which would have scared manager Roberto Martinez. |
Brendan Galloway – 8 |
Brendan Galloway has slowly managed to become a more confident player over the past few weeks and the youngster put in another quality display at left back against West Brom on Monday. Solid as ever with the ball, Galloway made a fine tackle on Saido Berahino with 15 minutes of the game remaining and the youngster’s presence has meant that Baines has not been missed too much. |
Gareth Barry – 6.5 |
Gareth Barry enjoyed another solid performance on the night but the midfielder uncharacteristically gave the ball away which allowed West Brom to grab a goal. |
James McCarthy – 7 |
Alongside Barry, it was another top quality performance from James McCarthy at the middle of the park. However, as a gloss to his display, the midfielder earned a justified yellow card for a ridiculous dive. |
Gerard Deulofeu – 7.5 |
Handed his first start of the season, Gerard Deuloefu most certainly staked a claim for a regular starting spot with a fine display in attack.
Following a quiet first half, Deulofeu came into the fore during the second period and his two fantastic crosses produced two goals of the highest quality. |
Steven Naismith – 6 |
Since his heroics against Chelsea, Steven Naismith has looked a bit off colour and the striker did not enjoy the best of outings against West Brom. |
Ross Barkley – 6.5 |
Ross Barkley was arguably Everton’s man of the match against Swansea City last time out but the midfielder could not produce his best against West Brom on Monday.
A bit wasteful on the ball, Barkley missed a great chance in the first half and his influence on the game waned as the match progressed. |
Romelu Lukaku – 9 |
Lukaku endured a horror show against Swansea but the young striker more than made up for it by putting in a match winning performance against West Brom. Lukaku’s finishing has come under a lot of scrutiny this season but the striker was a predator against the Baggies and his two goals ensured that Everton would be grabbing a memorable comeback victory. |
Substitues
Darron Gibson – 7 |
Gibson came on during the last 20 minutes of the game and played an integral part in Everton’s victory by keeping possession expertly. |
Arouna Kone – 7 |
After struggling from the start, Kone once again managed to make a huge impact off of the bench by grabbing the equalizer with a fine strike. |
Aaron Lennon – 6 |
Lennon was used as a late sub by Martinez to eat up the final moments of the game. |
